In Rememberance . . .

Cathy "Kathleen" Sarmiento

born on May 20, 1958, passed away at the age of 50 on June 22, 2008, at her home with her family by her side. Kathleen was born to Jose B. (†) and Maria C. Sarmiento in her native home of Guam.

Upon graduation from the Academy of Our Lady of Guam, Kathleen joined the Sisters of Mercy, the community she served for 25 years. As a Sister of Mercy, she prepared for her vocation and calling as an educator at the University of Guam and at the University of San Francisco. She taught at the Academy of Our Lady of Guam and later served as an administrator at Bishop Baumgartner and St. Anthony's School in Guam and served as President of Mount Carmel School in Saipan. Kathleen came to Laredo in 2002 with the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate then served as interim principal at St. Augustine High School from April to June of 2003; she returned to serve as the school's vice principal in August of 2004 and since 2005, for the past three years, has served as the principal of Laredo's only Catholic High School. Kathleen was dedicated to the school's mission of "developing the whole person, promoting Gospel values, inspiring a love of learning, and upholding academic excellence in a nurturing community." She considered the St. Augustine administration, faculty, staff, students and their parents her family and had a strong love and affection for the school.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her father Jose B. Sarmiento. She is survived by her mother, Maria C. Sarmiento; her sister Norma Sarmiento; her brothers Joseph, Ron, and Pedro Shawn; her nephews Eian and Rieko Sarmiento; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Interment will be held at a later date in Guam, her native land.In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Kathleen Sarmiento Memorial Fund at St. Augustine School, 1300 Galveston, Laredo, TX
